Google to help build world’s largest genomic database on autism

Autism Speaks, an autism science and advocacy organization, is launching a program to develop the world’s largest database of genomic sequence information on people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families.

It’s partnering with Google to store the database, called the Autism Speaks Ten Thousand Genomes Program (AUT10K), on Google’s Cloud Platform.

AUT10K will serve as an open resource to support autism research. Autism Speaks includes the largest private collection of DNA samples from 12,000 autism cases with diagnoses and detailed phenotyping, which researchers have been using for more than 15 years.

“This is a really exciting time for us,” Rob Ring, chief science officer at Autism Speaks, told CBS News, adding that without the partnership with Google, the project would not have been possible to execute

“The goal is to build an open-access database for the entire research community,” Ring said.

But how secure is it to store data in the Google Cloud?

“This is as secure as it gets,” Ring said. “The important thing is that the data has been deidentified,” with names and other personal information stripped out, he explained, and researchers who will be using it will have to agree with certain terms of use.

“This announcement represents an unprecedented intersection of business, science and philanthropy that will drastically accelerate the pace of autism research,” Bob Wright, co-founder of Autism Speaks, said in a statement. “The insight and expertise the Google team brings to the table is unmatched. Utilizing Google Cloud Platform further advances Autism Speaks’ commitment to advancing cutting-edge science.”

“Modern biology has become a data-limited science. Modern computing can remove those limits,” David Glazer, engineering director for Google Genomics, said in a statement. “We are excited … about the opportunity for Google Cloud Platform to help unlock causes and treatments of autism.”

Autism Speaks launched the AUT10K project in collaboration with the Hospital for Sick Children’s Centre for Applied Genomics in Toronto.

“The Autism Speaks AUT10K Program is a remarkable achievement,” Dr. Steve Scherer, who directs the Center and who will be the director of AUT10K, said in a statement. “The collaboration between a pioneering tech company and the foremost autism science organization has the potential to transform the autism research landscape in exceptional ways. No other organization outside of major health institutions and academia has accomplished this much this quickly.”

Study: Many Patients Struggle To Understand Electronic Lab Results

Under the 2009 economic stimulus package, health care providers who demonstrate meaningful use of certified electronic health records can qualify for Medicaid and Medicare incentive payments (Bresnick, EHR Intelligence, 8/21).

Study Details

For the study, researchers from the University of Michigan administered an online test to 1,817 adults ages 40 to 70, who were asked to respond as if they had Type 2 diabetes.

Participants were shown test results for hemoglobin A1c levels, which are used to measure blood sugar control, in addition to other blood test results. The test results were shown in a format similar to the way they are displayed in some EHR systems’ patient portals.

Participants also took tests to measure their:

1.     Numeracy skills; and
2.     Health literacy (Brian Zikmund-Fisher et al., JMIR, August 2014).

Study Findings

The researchers found that:
 

1. 77% of participants with higher numeracy skills and health literary were able to identify   hemoglobin A1c levels outside of the standard range; and
2. 38% of participants with lower numeracy skills and health literacy were able to identify hemoglobin A1c levels outside of the standard range (EHR Intelligence, 8/21).

In addition, participants with higher numeracy and health literacy scores were more likely to consider how high the test result levels were when deciding whether to call a physician.

Study co-author Brian Zikmund-Fisher said, “We can spend all the money we want making sure that patients have access to their test results, but it won’t matter if they don’t know what to do with them.” He recommended designing ways to present test results that are more intuitive for patients, which he said could help improve health outcomes

In Kentucky, Advanced Solutions has created what they say is the next generation in 3D printing, the BioAssemblyBot. It’s essentially a multi-axis robot which can replicate 3D tissue assemblies of organic design. Using the company’s TSIM Software, doctors and researchers can construct biological models for later fabrication with the BioAssemblyBot. Employing laser sensors, a robot arm is used to select a syringe from a storage rack and dispenses organic material of a particular set of characteristics to build, from scratch, a functioning biological model.

Advanced Solutions Life Sciences works on the “discovery, design, development and commercialization of integrated software and hardware solutions for the fields of science that involve living organisms, molecular biology, and biotechnology.” That’s a mighty big target, but the company sees applications for their technology solutions in the fields of health, agriculture, medicine, medical device manufacturing, the pharmaceutical industry and the food science industry, so the potential rewards are tantalizing indeed.

While the actual use of the device for human, patient-ready biological structures might well be three to five years away, the work being done now in preparation for that day is more than startling, it’s a harbinger of a future certain to materialize.

Once the TSIM software has assembled a precise 3D model of the tissue structure required, cell layers, cell types, their locations, and their attributes are then built by the BioAssemblyBot.

The technology won’t be cheap – the price of the machine starts at $159,995 – but when you consider that this patent-pending device uses a six-axis robot arm and can be loaded with up to ten independent delivery systems, the price seems reasonable.

Capable of printing organ structures down to a resolution of 20µm in a 300mm x 250mm x 150mm build volume, the BioAssemblyBot also features automated syringe exchange, automatic calibration of syringe tips, and a variety of utilities aimed at precisely leveling the print bed. The device also includes a live feed of the action as it happens.

Which University offers Doctor of medicine in Caribbean without MCAT?

One of the ways to get into medical school without taking the MCAT is to go through a provisional medical school admission process.
